If your Android phone is constantly popping up ads: on the lock screen, in the notification area or directly on the home screen (desktop) and you need to get rid of it, you can find out more about it in the instructions below.

Pop-up ads on Android can be caused by both common applications, otherwise harmless, and some potentially unwanted software, which is difficult to detect and identify what exactly causes the appearance of ads. All possible options will be considered in order. Examples of paths in the settings are given for pure Android and for Samsung phones.

  • Ads on the lock screen and in the Android notification area from websites
  • Pop-up ads on the Android home screen, on top of apps, and on the lock screen
  • How to find out which app is showing ads on Android and remove it
  • More information on ad blocking
  • Video tutorial

Ads on the lock screen and Android notification area from websites

The first part is about a very simple case, which, however, some novice Android users are not familiar with. This option will work if you see pop-up ads on the lock screen and in the notification area like in the screenshot below (usually with the browser and website address).

The reason for these ads is that they subscribe to notifications from various sites when you click the "Allow" button on your browser. The thing is that for many sites this is a way to earn money and with the help of push notifications you are sent ads. It is easy to get rid of it:

  1. In your browser, go to your notification settings. For example, in Google Chrome, click on the menu button - Settings - Site Settings - Notifications. In Yandex Browser - menu button (three dots) - Settings - Notifications - "Notifications from sites".
  2. In the list, you will see a list of sites that can send you notifications. Among them will be those that show advertisements. Click on such a site and either click "Clear and reset" (in Chrome, you can also simply disable notifications, but it's better to clear the settings and no longer allow push notifications on this site) or "Block" (in Yandex Browser).

After that, such notifications will stop coming. Unless you've added some sites to your home screen (you've probably seen, some sites have a suggestion at the bottom to add it to your home screen). In that case, delete that site as a regular app.

Why ads constantly appear on top of your home screen, apps, and lock screen on Android

In case ads on Android pop up over system screens and while charging, it could be due to one of two reasons:

  • These are regular app ads - for example, you have installed a non-standard screen blocker, a free launcher, an app to display a contact in full screen or to determine who is calling by number. If it is a free application, it may well show ads and it is not a virus, examples are on the screenshot. You can refuse to use such an application. If this option is not suitable - read the information in the section of the article with more information about blocking ads.
  • Sometimes ads can appear everywhere and at any time, and you can't figure out which application is showing those ads. Then, in all likelihood, it is either potentially unwanted software or applications from not quite clean developers to whom you have given too many permissions.

The second case is usually the most difficult to diagnose. But it is possible to find out which application is showing ads.

How to find out which app is showing ads on Android and remove it

There are several applications available in the Play Market that allow you to determine in one way or another what exactly shows pop-up ads on your Android phone. They work on different principles and using only one app doesn't always give you the information you need.

I recommend using the following two apps together (both available in the Play Market):

  • Popup Ad Detector - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=popup.ads.detector
  • Goclean - Ad Detector - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gobest.goclean

The first app works as follows: after its installation, when you have given the necessary permissions to the app, it will start displaying the icon of the last running app on top of the screen. If at some point an advertisement suddenly appears on the Android screen, it means that some application caused it and the icon will change: tap on it and see which application was triggered last. There will also be a button to view all the last launched applications with the possibility to delete them.

Unfortunately, this doesn't always work and in some cases the ads seem to be coming from Google's system applications. In this case, you can also turn to the Goclean app. In it, motorola edge 30 ultra go to the "Ad detector" tab and set the switch to "Include Ads". You will see a list of all applications (including the "good" ones) that may show ads.

After that, it is advisable to just work with your phone while the ads appear again. And then go to the same application section again and look at the "Count" parameter next to the application name. If the counter shows a large number, and you have not accessed this application - this is strange and it is possible that it is the application that causes the pop-up ads. You can go to uninstall it with the "Del" button (or simply uninstall it in the app settings).

There is another application that may be useful in the context of adware detection: Uninstaller, available on the Play Market https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.GoodTools.Uninstaller . The app is not the newest, but it works well on the latest versions of Android. Once launched, you will see a list of all installed applications, with recently installed ones displayed at the top.

If among them you see those that you didn't install (sometimes they hide under the system, having a simple icon "with android"), then there is a possibility that you have enabled installation from unknown sources and some other application (which you installed) has downloaded and installed another application itself and it is already showing ads. Also, if the problem with pop-up ads has appeared recently, you can simply uninstall all recent applications.

If a manual search does not help, try scanning with Malwarebytes Anti-malware for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.malwarebytes.antimalware - the application "specializes" in exactly these types of infections.

After you finish using it, regardless of the result, I recommend uninstalling all the applications I recommended above: you don't need to keep them on your phone permanently (they can waste battery and load the phone unnecessarily), only for one-time troubleshooting.

Also, I recommend disabling installation of apps from unknown sources.

App permissions, Android admins

If nothing has worked so far, or if you've decided that previous apps have detected the wrong thing, consider this: many useful apps can also cause ads to constantly appear on your Android phone, especially if you've allowed them. And just because you're used to using that app, and its reviews are almost all positive, doesn't mean it's completely harmless.

I've already mentioned that they can be launchers, security apps, number dialers and caller IDs, blockers, some cleaning and "battery saving" apps, but this is not a complete list: for example, there are camera and QR code scanning apps, third-party keyboards that also require unnecessary permissions and show ads.

What to do? Look into the special permissions settings on your Android phone. On different versions and models they are in different locations, I'll show for pure Android 7, Android 9 and for Samsung Galaxy.

Overlays (display on top of other windows, "always on top") - if an app has this permission, it can display anything and anywhere on your phone. To see a list of apps that have this permission, you can:

  • On Android 7 - Settings - Applications - Top right menu button - Customize apps - Overlay on top of other windows.
  • On Android 9 - Settings - Apps and notifications - Advanced - Special access - Overlay on top of other apps.
  • On Samsung Galaxy - Settings - Apps - Menu button on the top right - Special access rights - Always on top.

If you see any non-system apps in the list of apps that have no reason to display anything on top of the home screen or lock screen, feel free to disable this permission for them.

Device administrators - apps with special access to Android that can do almost anything with your phone or tablet. To find a list of such apps, you can:

  • On Android 7 - Settings - Security - Administrators.
  • On Android 9 - Settings - Apps and notifications - Advanced - Special access - Device admin apps.
  • On Samsung Galaxy - Settings - Biometrics and security - Other security settings - Device administrators.

Usually, the list shouldn't contain anything other than Google apps ("Find Device", "Google Pay" and the like), the phone manufacturer, sometimes - antivirus (and that, not all of them are actually secure). If in your case the list is more extensive and there is something in it that you shouldn't give admin access to, try disabling unnecessary admins.

More information about ad blocking on Android

Very often in discussions of the problem in question, there are recommendations to install AdGuard for Android (available on the official website adguard.com/en/ ) to block ads. In general, for a lot of ads, the method really works.

But in cases with potentially unwanted applications, it doesn't solve the cause of the problem, it only fights the effect: all that happens is that such applications block access to advertising (they can't download it from the Internet to show it to you), but they continue to work. My opinion: it is better to give up such applications and look for a replacement from more conscientious developers.

Hopefully, one of the approaches will help you in identifying the source of the problem with constantly popping up and pop-up ads on your Android device and eliminate it.
