WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give you an increase in specific stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item upgrader mod by +3. Each upgrade also increases an unspecified substat.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless the item has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like Eth Titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as useful for the latter due to the need to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be applied to the enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader at least once every couple of weeks to ensure that your equipment is up to date.

The cost of upgrading will be based on the current item level of the equipment being upgraded however, they will always be cheaper than purchasing new equipment from other sources. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest up to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. A similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapon, armor, tool and accessory upgrades. They can be bought by players from NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for various currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be applied to any weapon, tool or armor. The button will display a preview of an item's next level of upgrade, when there are enough materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the slot of the item upgrades and current item upgrades level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for instance. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Certain upgrades provide discounts on Flightstones. After an item has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currencies.

A lot of locations offer upgraders for items, including the main Island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and a chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases with the number of items that are being upgraded, and can be boosted by requiring players to complete specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the beginning, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. The NPCs who are able to facilitate upgrades are available only via a variety of ways. This is both a benefit and a drawback.

In Season 3, many new features have been added to the upgrade system. When a player has an upgrade to a specific level for an item level upgrade [E 10100 published an article] in an armor slot, upgrading further items to the same level will cost less even when they are part of a different gear set.

The amount of Valorstones required for upgrades is reduced, and the discount is available across all accounts. Similarly, the amount of Harbinger Crests needed to upgrade is also reduced and is not available until players have reached certain milestones in their achievement.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW, players have a couple of options. Flightstones are an option that is accessible to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more specialized, and are used during specific item level upgrades. Crests are an integral element of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System, which was introduced in version 10.1. They are available in four ranks.

The first thing to be aware of is that crests can only be used to purchase equipment that is of a particular rank, and each rank has its own requirements for its upgrade items path. The simplest and easiest upgrade is 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, based on the type or equipment that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through working through content that is of the appropriate level, which means walking around and doing outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, dungeons or raids of any difficulty for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses to obtain endgame gear. These crests are then exchanged with an upgrader such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and routes.

The new currency system isn't complicated to use, however it does bring some changes to the upgrade process. For example, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it will no longer require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is intended to allow players to get their gear up to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another notable change is that crests have one usage and it's crucial to use them properly. For instance, it's a good idea make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the best equipment available and save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan to create. This is particularly applicable to items like trinkets and rings that fill multiple slots. The account-wide discount is only applicable when all the slots on the character are filled with high-quality gear.
